Traveling to Puerto Escondido is easier than it seems, with several transportation options available depending on your preferences and location.
By plane: The fastest and most convenient way to get there is to fly directly to Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM). You can take direct flights from Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey.
Once at the airport, you can either take a taxi or book a private transfer to get to your accommodation. Downtown Puerto Escondido is just a 15-minute drive from the airport, making it easy to start your adventure as soon as you land.
You can also get to Bahías de Huatulco International Airport (HUX) which is a 2-hour drive from Puerto Escondido and offers more domestic and international flights.
Or if you want to include a tour of Oaxaca, arrive at Oaxaca International Airport (OAX) and travel by road.
By road: If you prefer a more scenic experience, you can reach Puerto Escondido by road. The new Oaxaca-Puerto Escondido highway reduces the trip from Oaxaca to 2.5 hours and from Mexico City, from 12 to 8 hours. Several bus companies offer direct routes that take around 15 hours, depending on the route and stops. From Oaxaca, there are also buses and vans that offer regular services: buses usually take the longer and more comfortable route (via Pochutla), while faster vans take the direct route through the sierra and take between 6 and 7 hours.

As a nomad who is always looking for the best experiences around the world, I have been fortunate to stay in boutique hotels in Europe, Asia and many other destinations.
My friends had recommended Puerto Escondido to me and of course I had it on my bucket list. Finally, I decided to make this paradise my next destination, and Raíz was my choice.
From the moment I arrived at the hotel, the welcome was warm and genuine. The team made me feel at home, something you rarely experience from the first greeting. I was greeted with a Donají, their welcome cocktail, a classic of the house with a delicious tropical flavour. The architecture and design of the hotel blends perfectly with the local atmosphere, giving it a unique and welcoming touch.
The first thing I would like to highlight is the quality of the food and drinks at Hotel Raíz. Each dish is a fusion of Oaxacan flavors and presentations that seem to have come straight from an art gallery.
The breakfast was simply irresistible, abundant and varied, accompanied by a delicious coffee. And of all the dishes, I'd go for the enchiladas with mole coloradito, which are without a doubt the signature dish of the house .
One of the most memorable moments was the mezcal tasting organized at the hotel. This experience was unique, showing me the richness and diversity of this Oaxacan distillate. Trying it with fruits and salts was a true explosion of flavors.
The Raíz Hotel is a true oasis of peace. Despite being a small place, it is very cozy and full of corners where you can relax.
From the pool next to the bar, ideal for enjoying drinks, to the palapa on the top, which was almost always empty and I could enjoy that magical place just for myself. But my favorite moments were undoubtedly the yoga classes I enjoyed every morning, included in the reservation.
The rooms have a unique decoration, which keeps alive the essence of the Puerto Escondido of yesteryear. Every detail is thought out to offer comfort and authenticity. The cleanliness and care were impeccable, which made my stay even more pleasant.
Without a doubt, what made my stay unforgettable was the hotel team. Every member of the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. I felt like I was spending time with friends rather than hotel employees.
My time at Raíz has come to an end, but I leave with the certainty that I will return. This place not only offered me a relaxing and comfortable stay, but it also made me feel part of its community. The memories I take with me from Puerto Escondido and this beautiful hotel will be with me forever.

The choice of Puerto Escondido as the destination for Hotel Raíz was not a whim, but a decision that had to be taken with all senses. For Pier and Ainoa, founders of Raíz, Puerto Escondido represented much more than a simple tourist destination.
Puerto Escondido, on the coast of Oaxaca, is the ideal destination for those looking for an authentic getaway. Known for its pristine beaches and vibrant local life, this coastal paradise offers a perfect setting to disconnect from everyday stress and connect with what is essential.
The beauty of its landscapes, the warmth of its people and the peaceful atmosphere make it the ideal place to establish a boutique hotel that celebrates authenticity and balance.
This story would not be complete without Don Felipe, the previous owner of the land. His deep connection with the place and his emotional farewell to the old house left an indelible mark on Pier and Ainoa.
When they discovered the land, they saw beyond the bricks and wood: they saw the history and the love that Felipe had invested in that space.
They promised not only to preserve the original structure, but also to honour its legacy by integrating the old house into the design of the new hotel. This promise became the essence of the project, preserving a part of the past and interweaving it with the future.

If you are planning a trip to Puerto Escondido, you will discover that in this magical corner of Oaxaca, gastronomy also tells stories: ancestral flavors, fresh ingredients that seem to have just been taken from the sea, and recipes that resonate with the warmth of its people.
In this article, we invite you to discover three dishes that are a true representation of local flavor and culture.
Close your eyes and imagine the crunch of a freshly made corn tortilla. It is large, golden, and its surface is filled with flavors that envelop you: refried beans, cheese that melts and fuses with the sauce, that lard that gives it a unique touch. Whether accompanied with beef jerky, cecina or even vegetables.
This iconic dish is not only delicious, but it carries with it the spirit of community, where sharing a tlayuda is like sharing an intimate conversation with Oaxaca.
Also known as the "Oaxacan pizza," tlayuda has pre-Hispanic roots. In ancient times, large tortillas were prepared as a way to preserve corn, and gradually they became a versatile dish.
One of the dishes that best captures the essence of Puerto Escondido. The smoky aroma of the embers mixes with the freshness of the fish, seasoned with a chili sauce that awakens all your senses. The combination of intense, but balanced flavors is a tribute to the ocean that surrounds this beautiful region.
The term "a la talla" refers to the preparation of marinated and grilled fish on traditional grills, which has become very popular throughout the Mexican Pacific coast.
Immerse yourself in the freshness of Puerto Escondido shrimp ceviche, a true treasure of the Oaxacan coast. Prepared with fresh shrimp marinated in lime juice, each bite reveals the perfect combination of juicy tomatoes, red onion, cilantro and a subtle hint of chili that awakens the senses.
This dish is not only a delight for the palate, but an invitation to enjoy the essence of the sea, all while relaxing in Oaxaca.
The gastronomy of Puerto Escondido is an experience for the soul. It is not just about eating, it is about immersing yourself in traditions, in the heart of Oaxaca, where each dish is a story told with fresh ingredients and ancestral techniques.
Beyond these three culinary treasures, there are 7 types of moles, tichinda tamales and many other delicacies that you can only discover here.
In Raíz, we are committed to offering you not only a place to rest, but a space where Oaxacan cuisine is your traveling companion.
Make sure to follow our Instagram to inspire you with the colors of Oaxacan cuisine. We look forward to seeing you!
